How many CONCACAF teams qualify for the Soccer World Cup?

Three teams automatically qualify for the World Cup with an additional opportunity for one further team through the inter-confederation playoffs. Only 6 of the 41 member states get to compete for the automatic places based on their FIFA world rankings. Those six teams compete in a league format, playing home and away with the top three sides going through. The fourth placed team will play in the CONCACAF play-off final.

35 remaining member states play in a series of 8 groups. Each of those group winners play in a knockout round (Quarter Final, Semi-final and Final) the winner of which takes the other spot on the CONCACAF play-off final.

What Is the CONCACAF Play-off

The fourth placed team from the Hexagonal group (6 top seeded sides) will play against the best side from the remaining CONCACAF members. This is the CONCACAF play-off and decides which country will go on to represent the Caribbean, North American and Central American regions in the inter-confederation play-off. The winner of this, then takes their place at the Soccer world cup.
