What Bets Can you Make on the EPL?

EPL 2018/19 Season Betting Review – The Sportsbooks get it correct.

Who won the 2018/19 EPL?

The 2018/19 English Premier League season started with Manchester City as favourites among the sportsbooks. The season ended with them winning the title. It sounds straight forward but does not tell the tale of what was a relentless battle between two of the best sides the English top division has ever seen. Between City and Liverpool, they amassed a staggering 195 points as the pushed each other in their unrelenting charge.

Nobody thought that Liverpool would go the distance but not only did they prove everybody wrong on the domestic front, they upset the odds in Europe. On a famous night in Madrid, Liverpool beat EPL rivals Tottenham to win the ULC. However, that just makes what Manchester City achieved even more impressive. Guided by Pep Guardiola, City has dominated the EPL both in style and honours for some time.

Who got relegated from the EPL 2018/19?

Huddersfield had defied the oddsmakers in the previous two seasons. First, they gained promotion to the EPL from the Championship in 2016/17. They followed that by beating the odds and avoiding relegation in 2018. The side couldn’t repeat the “miracle” in 2019 though and returned to the Championship with just 16 points. That sum was 20 below Brighton who finished 17th, one place above the drop zone.

Fulham and Cardiff completed the relegation spots. While the Welsh side were favorites for the drop, Fulham failed to live up to the pre-season optimism. They invested money into the squad and looked to continue the stylish brand of football that got them to the EPL in 2018. Fulham couldn’t stop conceding goals with 81 hitting the back of the net, the most of any team in the EPL. Their confidence was low, leading to an unsettled management set-up and disorganised playing staff. Unfortunately, they seemed doomed from early on.

Who were the surprise team?

Wolverhampton Wanderers qualified for Europe and played some attractive football over the course of the season. Along the way, Wolves also picked up some decent results and points against the EPL’s top six sides. The management recruited well but success is never guaranteed when top players come into the EPL from other countries. Despite all that, this side just clicked and under the guidance of Nuno Santo the future looks bright for this proud old soccer team.

How Is the EPL Winner Decided?

The format of the EPL is pretty straight forward with no playoff situation. The regular season is made up of 760 games, 38 for each of the 20 teams of which 19 are at home and 19 on the road. That is 1 game against the other 19 sides with home field advantage and a second game against those same teams at their stadium. This provides a balanced and fair competition.

The winner of the EPL will be the team that has amassed the most points during the regular season based on the following:

  • Win = 3 points
  • Tie = 1 point
  • Defeat = 0 points

This competition format looks to balance out “freak” results and awards the trophy to the most consistent team over the season. To be crowned EPL champion, you need to be the best side over 38 games. This makes the story of Leicester City in 2016, one of the greatest in sporting history. Leicester started the season at 5000/1 with most UK sportsbooks (+500,000) yet defied the odds to win the EPL (10 points clear of second placed Arsenal).

Where teams finish level on points at the end of the 38 game season, the league will be decided on the following (working down the list if still equal):

  • Goal Difference: Total goals scored minus total goals conceded.
  • Goals Scored: If Goal Difference is equal, it is decided based on total goals scored.

Who Gets Relegated From the EPL?

There are three relegation spots in the EPL and they will be filled by the three worst sides in the competition after 38 games of play. As with the champions, relegation is based on the total number of points amassed over the season. This is calculated with 3 points for a win, one point for a tie and 0 points for a loss. The three teams with the fewest points at the close of the season will be relegated from the EPL. These teams start the next season in the Championship, the highest soccer league in the EFL (English Football League). Replacing those three relegated teams are three sides out of the Championship.

Relegation from the EPL can be devastating for a club with the revenue gap between the two leagues significant. This factor makes the bottom three an exciting betting opportunity over the course of a season. As with the winner of the league, if two teams can’t be separated on points, their position is determined on goal difference and the goals scored.

EPL Champions League Qualifiers

The biggest prize in European club soccer is the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and four places are awarded to teams in the EPL. The Premier League awards UCL places to those teams finishing in the top four positions at the close of the regular season.

One of the most popular EPL betting 2020 markets is the race for a top four. Claiming one of these positions is always intense given how much money is on offer from TV. This is why betting on UCL qualification is big business and as the season progresses, brings massive swings in price as the market moves.
